I changed the DocumentRoot from /home/git/gitlab/public to opt/gitlab/embedded/service/gitlab-rails/public to reflect the directory structure of gitlab omnibus. I also added an apache2 init file that makes sure gitlab is started after apache. I experienced issues where gitlab would start before apache and override all apache websites.
