A messy fix. Seems like an oversight that this isn't in base. I probably should have made my own newtype to avoid the orphan.
ghc-8.6 has been out for while now.

Makes a horrible orphan instance for
First, needed because of theMonadFailchange. It's not perfect but at least people who come here to try it out will be able to run the examples.
